Arizona Window Tint Laws Explained: What's Legal and What's Not in 2026

Almost every tint customer asks us some version of "is this legal?" Fair question. Arizona tint laws are actually straightforward, but there's a ton of bad info on the internet. We've been installing tint in the Valley for over ten years. Here's how the law actually works.

VLT: The Number That Matters

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — it's the percentage of light that passes through the tint film. A higher number means more light gets through (lighter tint). A lower number means less light (darker tint). Arizona law sets minimum VLT percentages for each window position on your vehicle. Here's the breakdown:

Windshield: Non-reflective tint allowed on the top 5 inches only. No full windshield tint.

Front side windows (driver & passenger): Must allow at least 33% VLT.

Rear side windows: Any darkness — no VLT minimum.

Rear window: Any darkness — no VLT minimum.

The key takeaway: you have freedom on the back half of the vehicle. You can go as dark as you want on the rear windows. But those front two side windows — the ones next to the driver and front passenger — have to let at least a third of the light through. That's the line that gets people in trouble.

Reflectivity Limits

Arizona also limits how reflective your tint can be — 35% max on both front and rear side windows. You know that mirror-finish chrome tint you sometimes see on out-of-state cars? Not legal here. The ceramic and carbon films we install aren't anywhere near that limit, so it's not something you'd run into with us. But if another shop offers you "mirror tint," walk away.

Medical Exemptions

Arizona allows medical exemptions. If you have lupus, photosensitivity, or another condition where UV exposure is a medical issue, your doctor can write a letter saying you need darker tint. With that letter, you can go below the 33% VLT limit on the front side windows.

You'll want to keep a copy of the medical exemption letter in the vehicle at all times. If you're pulled over and an officer notices the tint, the letter is your documentation. We can install the appropriate tint once you have the exemption — just bring the letter to your appointment.

What Happens If Your Tint Is Illegal?

If you're pulled over and your tint doesn't meet Arizona's requirements, you'll typically get a "fix-it" citation. That means you have a set amount of time — usually 15 to 30 days — to bring the vehicle into compliance. If you don't fix it, the fine is usually around $100 to $250 depending on the jurisdiction. Some counties are stricter than others.

The bigger problem is if you're in an accident. Illegal tint can complicate your insurance claim because it's a modification that doesn't meet state code. We've had customers deal with that headache. Not worth it.

How We Keep You Legal

At Mr. Glassworks, we measure the VLT after every install using a tint meter. Not before — after. That's because factory glass already blocks some light, so the combined VLT of your factory glass plus the tint film is what actually matters. A 35% VLT film on glass that already blocks 20% of light will measure lower than 35% once it's installed. We account for that and make sure the final reading is legal.

We also document the VLT readings and give you a receipt showing the film specifications and measured values. If you're ever questioned, you've got the paperwork.

Ceramic Tint: The Best Option for Arizona

We run ceramic tint on our own work trucks and we recommend it to everyone who walks in. It blocks more heat than dyed or metallic films without going darker. Here's the thing most people don't realize: a ceramic film at 35% VLT rejects more heat than a cheap dyed film at 5% VLT. So you stay legal and your car stays cooler. We install ceramic starting at $395 with a lifetime warranty.
